The Arkansas State Archives houses approximately 13,000 cubic feet of state records and manuscript collections pertaining to the history of Arkansas and its people. These materials have been described and inventoried for ease of access. These inventories, called finding aids, are keyword searchable. You may also browse these finding aids alphabetically using the links below. Click the collection's title to view the finding aid.

Separated Materials:  Some archival collections contain materials that have been stored separately from the bulk of the collection due to those items' preservation needs. Generally, this affects collections that include artifacts that have been moved to the archives' museum collection, and the existence of artifacts in a collection has been noted in that collection's finding aid. Due to the nature of artifact and other separated materials, we require researchers to fill out an Artifact Access Form and send it in to state.archives@arkansas.gov, to schedule an appointment to view artifacts from the museum collection.

Collection Title: Jameson, John H. papers
Dates: 1862-1864
Summary:

This collection contains correspondence from John H. Jameson to his wife, Thirsaline, while he was a soldier during the Civil War, and Confederate currency.

Summary:

This collection contains one large Bible dated 1825. Family information pages and a few other miscellaneous documents are also included.


Collection Title: J.E. Little Plantation records accretion
Dates: 1882-1979
Summary:

This collection contains materials pertaining to John Elijah Little, his family, their farm in Faulkner County, and their property and house in Conway. Included are deed records and personal correspondence relating to both properties, tax and business records for the farm at Lollie, bonds for the construction of a levee on the Arkansas River, pocket ledgers for farm business and construction of the Conway residence, as well as photographs and obituaries for most of the J.E. Little family.

This ledger contains invoices of dry goods purchased by the J.M. Richardson Company of DeValls Bluff, Arkansas, between 1907 and 1909.


Collection Title: Jobe, Thomas Jefferson diary
Dates: 1861 and 1867
Summary:

This diary describes activities of a Confederate soldier serving in Company B, First Arkansas Mounted Rifles, from the time of its organization at Des Arc in May 1861, until the beginning of August, when the company made it to Wilson’s Creek, Missouri, just before the battle there.


Collection Title: Joe Wheeler No. 247, United Daughters of the Confederacy records
Dates: 1898-1961
Summary:

This collection contains applications, meeting minutes, member lists, ledgers, convention and printed ephemera, and financial and correspondence documents regarding the Joe Wheeler No. 247 chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Dardanelle, Arkansas.


Collection Title: Johnson, Alexander A. papers
Dates: 1863-1879
Summary:

This collection consists of Civil War correspondence plus a journal and other items. The correspondence relates to locations in Tennessee and Georgia, and most were written from the battlefield. It is unknown who created the 1865-1879 journal.

Dates: 1862-1868
Summary:

This collection contains correspondence to Charles B. Johnson and others, telegrams to and from Johnson, and Confederate States vouchers issued by Johnson to various persons.


Collection Title: Johnson, Jane Letha elementary school report
Dates: 1954-1955
Summary:

Saint Mary’s Academy of Little Rock, Arkansas was founded in 1851 as a Catholic School for girls and is still teaching young women as of 2017. Jane Letha Johnson, daughter of Alvis L. Johnson, attended Mt. St. Mary’s in Little Rock. This item is a fifth grade school report from the Diocese of Little Rock, Mt. St. Mary's, for Jane Letha Johnson.
Purchased at Roy Dudley Estate Sales from the June Blankenship Estate.

Collection Title: Johnson, Rogerline photograph collection
Dates: 1952-1971
Summary:

This collection is comprised of photographic reproductions from black and white negatives of images taken by Rogerline Johnson, as well as promotional materials from a 2004 traveling exhibit of his work. The subjects and themes of Johnson’s body of work are of black life, the black experience, and the black community in the Arkansas Delta, primarily in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.

Summary:

This collection contains an inscribed photograph, a World War II letter, and one World War II drawing pertaining to Roy Johnson. The collection also involves a number of artifacts, moved to the archives' Three-Dimensional Materials collection.

Dates: 1916-1951
Summary:

This collection contains papers and books used by the Johnson Undertaking Company, a funeral home located in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, between the years of 1916 and 1951.


Collection Title: Johnston, Jane Letitia photographs and school yearbook
Dates: 1902-1927
Summary:

This collection has Jane Letitia Johnston’s certificate to teach in Craighead, Sharp, and Lawrence counties from 1902-1910, one copy of The Gallowegian, a publication that was written by the senior class of Galloway Female College, published in February of 1913, and six photographs. Jane Letitia Johnston was born in Ireland in August of 1882. She moved to America and attended Galloway Women’s College in Searcy, Arkansas, graduating in 1902. Galloway was a Women’s College established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1889. Jane became a teacher shortly after graduating. The school closed in June of 1933 due to budgetary issues. Photographs in this collection include images of the 1927 flood in Sharp County, an elementary class photograph, and photographs of the Hardy High girls’ basketball team, Jonesboro Senior Class, and the graduating class for Galloway College 1902.
